Changing the world happens one caring step at a time. To reduce plastic waste, Hallmark is developing AR-activated Cake toppers.
Gone are the plastic wedding figures and Birthday numbers. Now, the cake comes alive with even more emotional impact.

Wishful Cranes
Legend says that when a person folds 1000 paper cranes, their wish will be granted. They say that if you gift those cranes to the couple on their wedding day, you are wishing them 1000 years of happiness and prosperity. A great message that millions of parents can give to the wedding couple. The toppers themselves will be real-life paper cranes with a print on them that will activate the AR. The parents can write a message in the real-life crane itself, which the couple can read later on. The AR will have the message “Together Forever” with many balloon paper cranes floating above it.

Animation Process
The challenge of designing the AR animation is making sure the balloon cranes and the textures are readable even at a distance. As the project continued on, the size of the cranes changed along with the number of cranes that were in each bundle of balloons. By having fewer cranes and making them bigger, the animation reads better, even at a distance. The font itself changed to something more fragile and elegant to match with the floating cranes above.

Testing out the VR
Later, the animation itself was brought into Adobe Aero to see how well it worked in a VR setting.
Importing the different assets with all of their textures was difficult. The textures on the text and cranes were not visible when viewed in Adobe Aero. It took a bit of experimenting, but I figured out the problem was Adobe Aero's difficulty reading layered textures from Cinema 4D. After removing the layers, the textures were imported without a problem.
